Clement T. Hanson Memorial Scholarship

Clem Hanson was the first in his family to go to college. A scholarship to the University of Iowa started him down the path of business and personal success. When it came time to consider his legacy, the co-founder of HON Industries (Originally called Home O Nize) insisted on creating an endowment for scholarships to help continue the education of students for years and years to come.

Clem graduated from the College of Commerce at the University of Iowa. He had worked as an advertising executive for a firm in Iowa and as head of sales at a company in Illinois, developing a keen interest and ability in communications, public relations, and marketing.

An estate gift of appreciated stock formed the permanent endowment, and since 1985, Moline students have received the Hanson Scholarship. This four-year scholarship of $1,500 per year is given to four college-bound high school seniors who prove financial need and academic merit.

Believing deeply in giving back to the community, the founder of Hanson Advertising Agency in Moline was highly active. Clem’s children continued his legacy of caring. Instead of giving Christmas gifts, they contributed to the scholarship fund in their father’s memory. “Because of the scholarship fund, not only are there students who benefit, but we also get to celebrate my dad’s life every year, “stated the late Jim Hanson, Clem’s oldest son. Paying Generosity Forward. Honoring the legacy of one of our community’s leaders.

Joe K. Wasson Memorial Scholarship

The Joe K. Wasson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2024 by his children and their families to honor his life as an educator. Mr. Wasson served as a Chemistry and Physics teacher for 6 years in the Oakwood-Fithian School District, followed by over 25 years in the Moline School District. He started at Moline as a Chemistry and Physics teacher but soon began working as a Guidance Counselor and a Vocation Counselor. He ultimately served as the head of the Guidance Counseling department until he retired.

Mr. Wasson grew up on a farm and was exposed to various experiences, allowing him to learn numerous technical skills. If you asked him about his younger years, he would have told you that he never would have imagined ending up as a teacher. He worked on the farm, as a Milk Man, a truck driver, a shade tree mechanic and a meat cutter in a grocery store to name just a few of his early experiences. Serving in the military allowed him to attend college, and there, a dedicated Chemistry professor helped guide him into his profession. Even after starting as a teacher, he still spent time in the summer, and other breaks learning about the work life of others by serving as a school bus driver, heavy construction equipment operator, laborer at John Deere Plow and Planter, and even served on a construction crew for a summer when a new wing was being added to Moline High School.

What, you may ask yourself, does this have to do with a scholarship for a young person pursuing a career in a technical labor field? Mr. Wasson’s experiences taught him that there are many paths that a person can take to find a rewarding career, and he always tried to help match students with a career path that helped them meet their goals. Having worked in many varied fields, he felt well prepared to advise them on what they could expect in pursuing careers in their chosen field, whether they were going on to a training program, technical school, or college/university. He would feel thrilled and honored to know that this scholarship assisted a young person with the opportunity to pursue their life’s goal.

Srikanth Yerra Memorial Scholarship

Sri had a charitable heart and wanted to serve in small cities and villages without pay after school. While in Champaign as a student, he volunteered at the local hospital and worked as a research assistant in the laboratory. At Moline High School, Sri was involved in tennis and basketball. He also volunteered at the hospital. An avid student, Sri especially enjoyed his math, science, and geography classes. His philanthropic spirit also led him to donate blood and work in the Moline Public Library during the summer. His friends and family remember his sense of humor and kind-hearted attitude, especially toward those less fortunate than him. In setting up this scholarship in his memory, his family hopes to encourage and inspire another Moline High School student to dream big and achieve goals that may seem impossible.

“My condolences to Sri’s family. His passing so saddens me. I was Sri’s supervisor at Moline Public Library, and we all agreed he was a pleasant, intelligent, and joyful young man with a bright future. Sri’s love of people, especially children, always shone through. What a terrible loss for us all.” Barbara Trapp

Stan Woods Memorial Scholarship

Teacher | Coach | Counselor
Dean of Students | Gloom Naysayer | Bigger Than Life

The Stan Woods Memorial Scholarship was established in 2011 by the Woods Family in honor of their husband and father.
Mr. Woods was an educator for 38 years at Moline High School.

It was always sunny and 72 in Stan Woods world. The longtime educator and Moline High School counselor refused to deal with gloom.

He guided the school’s “Share Joys” program, which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the less fortunate.
“If a student slipped into the “gray” area, he took it upon himself to rescue those students, giving them a positive boost and pushing them toward becoming better students and people.” Mr. Burrus.

Even during his brief illness, he asked that any memorial be given to the Stan Woods Memorial Scholarship Fund. He was still giving, supporting, coaching, and bigger than life.
